Naturally Tanned Soay Sheepskins
Right before Thanksgiving in 2017 my good friend Kathy called and asked if I would be willing to go on an adventure and save some rare sheep from a shepherd who could no longer care for them. I quickly said "yes please!" and didn't think to ask for details! Well long story short, I picked up 47 Soay sheep, which are a rare breed of sheep from an Island outside of Scottland and are now part of the Shave 'em to Save em program. The majority of the sheep found new homes with new owners, and a few were left here for us to care for over the years. Last winter we noticed some of the older ewes had some major teeth issues, it happens, and we decided to cull them so they wouldn't suffer, and now we have a small batch of sheepskins to offer!
These were all naturally tanned at Driftless Traditional Tannery in WI and are a true representation of the breed's fleece quality. They measure ~2.5 feet long and 1.5 feet wide. We only have four of these beautiful hides, after this batch is gone we will never have any more available because we no longer (thankfully) have any of the Soay sheep.
Feel free to reach out with questions or to have additional pictures sent, all the hides are nearly identical.
