Shepherds share- Winters Night
A Shepherd’s Share
Welcome to our artisan spinner’s box, where two shepherds have curated the finest heritage breed wools to invoke a unique spinning experience.
Our Winter’s night box was inspired by the beauty of a winter's night, as shepherds our work slows down during the winter, it is a time for rest, planning, and returning to our crafts. Winter is a sacred time for shepherds, our connection with our sheep and flock deepens as they place their trust and life in our hands. Each day we ensure our flock has hay and fresh water, the hay is harvested and stored away all summer in preparation for these dark, cold days. This nourishment is essential for the growth of our sheep, their wool, and the spring lambs they carry. We, as shepherds, brave the weather to bring the sheep their hay twice a day, every day.
The blue darkness of winter greets us as we wake, and only leaves us for a few hours during the day, allowing the brilliant winter sun to lure us out of the house with visions of warmth. We are fooled by this brilliant sun, but thankful for its brief moment in our day. The dark returns quickly, filling our skies with brilliant coral colors as the sun sets. We hibernate in our darkness, restoring our bodies and preparing for the upcoming spring when the world wakes up. The frenzy of spring is coming, as shepherds and those close to the earth, we know that the spring will be here soon and the dark of winter will fade into the noise of spring. We celebrate this restful, dark, silent time as it is a brief season for us and a reminder of the great circle of life we are all part of.
Our Winter’s Night shepherd share is a collection of beautiful silvery Gotland roving, to represent the shadows of a winter’s night and the moon and stars' reflection on the snow. The light bouncing back up in a silvery dance of light and silence. Along with a braid of naturally dyed Gotland/Blue Face Leicester/ Border Leicester blend with specs of dyed mohair, which represent the brilliant coral sunset and the moody blue winter sky. The natural dyes we used are indigo blue, logwood purple, and onion skin yellow. These vibrant jewel tones invoke the depth of colors and shades of a dark winter’s night. As you spin this share we hope you are transported back to the wild spaces in life, where the dark wraps you in silence and lulls you to sleep near the warm glow of a fire. As you spin the roving, also spin the tales of lore, of the Holly king and Oak king, of the solstice and the forgotten ancient gods. Let this box transport you to crunchy snow under your feet as you walk under the full moon of a January night. Take in the stillness, the silence, and the far distant hoot of an owl. Celebrate the dark and thank these months for what they give us. A time to rest, recover, and rediscover our crafts in the long Winter’s Night.
Each box contains 2oz of pure Gotland roving and 2oz of Naturally dyed roving.
